Former student NETP 2009-12
Finished my A – Levels in 2009 from Billericay School; decided to study Engineering at the University of Northampton.
Whilst doing my degree I went on two industrial placements; the first was with Alumasc Precision Ltd in Burton Latimer. Alumasc is a die casting manufacturing facility, manufacture engine parts for companies like Caterpillar. Started work with no industry experience I found myself with the people who were truly dedicated to their jobs.
The second placement was with Cummins Engines Ltd in Daventry. Cummins is the largest independent engines manufacture in the world. I was working in the manufacture and testing department, monitoring engine testing procedures and working on solutions to overcome any potential problems.
In addition; I was doing project work which involved me making a control panel for the test cell which would control the ratio of water and antifreeze while testing engines. In addition to placements opportunities students were offered company tours in and around Northampton.
To enhance practical skills students were offered the opportunity to go to NVQ Level 2 course in engineering operation at Northampton College. This was the first time when I found myself in the workshop using lathe and milling machines, and other manual workshop machinery.
I am grateful to NETP; who found me 2 of the best placement opportunities which helped me made great contacts as well as gaining valuable experience. As a graduate from the University of Northampton I have been offered a position at Yazaki, world largest producer of wiring harnesses and worldwide market leader in the automotive industry as a Junior Design Engineer. In the current job market having a degree is important but the experience which University of Northampton has offered me through NETP has made a huge difference in terms of my job search.
Thank you to everyone who is part of this amazing programme.
