The HND covers the broad range of topics that would be expected of a modern professional engineer. This includes both mechanical and electrical principles as well as engineering design and materials science. Students are also taught about quality systems, engineering industry practice, economics and management and a range of other valuable skills.
A number of students are offered a 12-month paid work placement in a local engineering company through the Northants Engineering Training Partnership (NETP). The HND is also available as a part-time Top-Up option for students who have completed their HNC at Northampton and possible elsewhere.
Successful completion of the HND provides a gateway for direct entry to the BSc (Hons) Engineering programme.
The HND is taught one or two days per week. Normal entry is typically 140-160 UCAS tariff points for the HND. In addition to the standard entry requirements applicants will be expected to have achieved GCSE Mathematics (or equivalent) at Grade C or above.
